Flag Day celebrations for the Scottish Professional Football League

This month marked the launch of the second season of William Hill’s partnership with the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL). As the first games of the season kicked off, we were thrilled to take part in a long-standing tradition of Scottish football: Flag Days.

Flag Days are celebrations that take place on the first day of the new football season for the league-winning clubs of the previous season. Playing at home, the clubs raise the flag for their team to mark both their achievement, and the official start of the new season.

As title sponsor of the SPFL for the second year running, some of our senior leaders were invited to attend these matches and be part of the Flag Day celebrations with the teams on the pitch.

We are a ‘Proper supporter of Scottish football’, so of course we were proud to represent on the pitch at the four flags days across Scotland.

Sean Wilkins, our Chief Financial Officer, was on hand as the flag was unfurled ahead of Falkirk’s game against Dundee United live on Sky Sports. Andrew Denbigh, Director of Regional Operations in Retail, was in Arbroath for their televised match versus Ayr United and Mark Morrice, Retail Cluster Operations Manager, headed up to Peterhead for their clash against East Fife. Finally, Ben McCann, Head of Retail Marketing was at Celtic Park as they took on St Mirren live on Sky Sports.

Ben McCann said: “It was a proud moment for me personally to represent the business on such a great occasion. We have some exciting plans for our second season as title sponsor of the SPFL, moving to more commercially focused activation and ensuring that we deliver on our commitment to be a ‘Proper supporter of Scottish football’.”

Andrew Denbigh said: “Being part of the flag day ceremony was a thrill, and not just because it was on TV (!). The matches were also a great opportunity to catch up with local management and shop teams and really bang the drum for the fantastic new season to come.”
